Rod A.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

  • My name is Rod and I live in Manitoba. Last year I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My father had been diagnosed late in life, but I was only 57 at the time. Since the age of 40, yearly check ups were always done. My PSA jumped to 5.43 and after 12 biopsies I had three gleason scores of 7. I was told by the surgeon to have my prostate removed. This, at the time seemed to be my only solution. After talking with a couple of doctors and many people who had gone through this previously, they also said I should have it removed. But word got around and a friend of a friend said he had a procedure called HIFU in Toronto.

My wife and I researched everything we could on the internet. I found out the surgery could be done in Winnipeg. I had an appointment with Dr Karvalas at the Prostate Cancer Clinic. He never mentioned HIFU, but I explained that this was what I wanted done. He said he could do this. We had a long list of questions and he took two hours to explain everything and to answer our questions. By the time I left, I knew this was exactly what I wanted.

This surgery was not covered by our insurance, and I paid in full 6 weeks ahead. I had the surgery on Nov 1st, 2008 at the Maples Clinic and surgery was about three hours. We went back to our hotel shortly after. As we were going up the elevator, I felt light headed and fainted. We got to the room and I never experienced any pain but for 24 hours I have to say what I felt was discomfort and a strong urge to urinate.

I followed all instructions about what to do and not do. My cathetar was removed 18 days later. Since the surgery I have had no incontinence and all my functions are back. I have been taking a mild dose of Cialas twice a week. My latest PSA count was .09. I feel like I have won the lottery and am very grateful to have had this surgery. This is the best money I have spent and feel fortunate to have a new lease on life. Once again I would like to give Dr. Karvalas of Winnipeg a special thanks for a great job and for his care and consideration.
